Huskies Battle Back To Draw UMass

Tellez and Monte link up twice on equalizers.

AMHERST, Mass. – Down by a goal twice, the Northeastern Huskies (0-0-1) came back to equalize the UMass Minutemen (0-0-1), finishing in a 2-2 draw in their 2023 season opener at Rudd Field on Thursday evening.

Goals from Northeastern came in the 44th and 70th minutes, both of which were scored by grad. student Jack Monte, off of corner kicks from senior Federico Tellez. The NU back line held strong for the final 20 minutes and forced the draw, denying several late UMass chances.

  • The Minutemen were able to break the stalemate in the 25th minute on the counter attack for the 1-0 lead.
  • With the first half winding down the Huskies applied pressure and forced several offensive chances off throws and corners. In the 44th minute, a corner kick from Federico Tellez found Jack Monte who headed the ball down and into the net to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Early in the second, the Minutemen sent a cross into the box and tallied a one-touch volley to retake the lead at 2-1 in the 54th minute.
  • The Huskies equalized once again in the 70th minute off the combination of Federico Tellez and Jack Monte. Tellez delivered a line drive of a corner kick, which skipped off the  head of Monte and into the side of the net for Monte's first career multi-goal game.
  • UMass tried to get the go-ahead goal late in the contest but several quick reaction saves from Northeastern keeper Gregor Shaw, and great clears from the defense, kept the game level.
  • Tellez now has 19 career assists – he entered the season tied for fourth place all-time in program history at 17 assists, and now stands alone in fourth.
  • Monte's goals were the fifth and sixth of his career, and first since 2021 where he tallied three on the year. Tellez assisted on one of those goals, another corner kick to beat Harvard in overtime.
  • Shaw finished with five saves in his Northeastern debut. He was one of five players on the day to play their first game as a Husky.
  • It's the third straight season that Northeastern and UMass have opened the season with a draw – the previous two meetings ended with a 1-1 scoreline.

The Huskies return home on Monday, August 28 for their home opener against UMass Lowell at Parsons Field. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. and will stream on FloFC.
