WINSTON-SALEM, NC. – Marika Virthe tallied a team-high seven kills and three blocks, but it was not enough as the Northeastern volleyball team (0-3) fell to Wake Forest in straight sets on Saturday.
- Set One: The Huskies got off to a quick 4-1 lead after three straight service aces from Anabel Zier. The Demon Deacons responded right back with a 5-0 run to take the advantage back at 6-4. The teams traded points until Wake Forest went on another 5-0 run to take a 13-8 lead. Back-to-back kills from Virthe and Zier trimmed the deficit to 22-19 down the stretch, but Wake Forest held on to take the set 25-19.
- Set Two: Wake Forest stormed out to an early 5-1 lead in the frame and didn't look back. The Huskies tallied three straight points to make it 19-10, but the Demon Deacons remained in control, hitting .481 in the set, leading to a 25-14 win.
- Set Three: Northeastern and Wake Forest went back and forth in the frame early on, with neither leading by more than two points. The Demon Deacons began to pull away with three straight points halfway through leading 17-11. A kill by Defne Arliel and an error by the hosts trimmed the advantage to 21-18, but Wake Forest held on winning 25-18.
- Abby Reck chipped in with six kills.
- Jessica Frannea tallied 16 assists, two service aces, and eight digs.
The Huskies will return to the court at the Bryant Invitational on Friday, September 1 through Saturday, September 2.
