Strong Second Half Powers Huskies Past Seahawks, 3-1

WILMINGTON, N.C. – On the road to open the CAA schedule, the Northeastern Huskies (1-1-1, 1-0-0 CAA) collected their first win of the season, defeating the UNCW Seahawks (1-1-1, 0-1-0 CAA) by a score of 3-1 at UNCW Soccer Stadium on Saturday evening.

The Huskies scored three second-half goals off the feet of Tobias Wangerud (1), Davide Romeo (1) and Fraser Brown (2), and the defense held strong to neutralize the onslaught of UNCW shots to collect the team's first win of the 2023 season.

  • Neither team was able to find the score sheet in the first – the Huskies, despite holding less of the possession in the opening 45, led in shots on goal 1-0 at the half.
  • After no shots on target in the first half for UNCW, the Seahawks opened up the second with two in the first four minutes. The second shot off a corner was saved off the line by Kevin Ogudugu with a quick header.
  • Northeastern had another counter attack down the left sideline which resulted in the opening goal in the 58th minute – the run of Kevin Ogudugu started it, and his pass to Federico Tellez allowed Wangerud to find an open shot at the top of the 18. He received the pass from Tellez and fired a shot past the keeper for the 1-0 lead.
  • The Seahawks were able to respond in the 58th minute to quickly tie the game up at 1-1.
  • The Huskies went back on top in the 66th minute off the foot of Davide Romeo. After a free kick into the box, an attempted clear was headed out to the top of the 18 and Romeo took his shot and sent it past the goalkeeper for the 2-1 lead.
  • Another turnover in the final third was collected by Tellez, who fed Harry Sankey in the box – he then found Fraser Brown who took a quick shot that was slightly deflected by the UNCW keeper but it wasn't enough to keep the shot from going in. NU took a 3-1 lead in the 77th minute.
  • The Seahawks out-shot the Huskies 16-7, but only had a 5-4 margin in shots on goal.
  • Huskies keeper Gregor Shaw stopped three of the four shots he faced in his first NCAA win.
  • The Huskies start the season 1-1-1, 1-0-0 in CAA for the second straight season.

Northeastern returns to New England this coming Tuesday with another road match at Quinnipiac. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. and will stream on Quinnipiac's athletics website.
