Huskies Finish Perfect Weekend With Victories Over Siena, Bryant

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Abby Reck, Anabel Zier, and Defne Arliel tallied double-digits in both matches to lead the Northeastern volleyball team (3-3) to victories over Siena (0-6) and Bryant (4-3) on Saturday. The Huskies knocked off the Saints in four sets, and then closed the Bryant Invitational by taking down the host Bulldogs in five sets.
 
Zier, named All-Tournament MVP, tallied 12 kills on .550 hitting against Siena, and then a team-high 15 kills on .667 hitting against Bryant. Reck was also named to the All-Tournament team after tallying her first collegiate double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs vs. the Saints, and then another 12 kills vs. the Bulldogs.

  • Set One: The Huskies were dominant in the frame, going on a 15-0 run to take a commanding 22-5 advantage. The Saints had no answer, and Reck tallied back-to-back aces to seal the 25-7 win. Northeastern hit .357 in the set and held Siena to -.217.
  • Set Two: Both teams traded points early on, but Siena pulled ahead to go up 10-4 after four straight points. Midway through, back-to-back kills from Julianna Truscott and Zier knotted the frame up at 15, but Siena responded right back. The frame was tied multiple times towards the end of the set, but the Saints capitalized on a Husky error to go up 24-22 and won 25-23.
  • Set Three: Back and forth play continued, with neither team leading by more than three to start the frame. Northeastern led 10-7, but Siena responded with three straight points to tie the score up. A clutch kill by Arliel put Northeastern up 19-18, and then the Huskies were able to close the set at 27-25. Arliel was unstoppable in the frame, leading Northeastern with eight kills.
  • Set Four: The Huskies got off to an early 10-5 lead capped off by a service ace by Reck. The freshman continued to be a force on both offense and defense, putting Northeastern up 21-11 down the stretch with a kill, and then Arliel sealed the match with a kill to win 25-13. Reck tallied six kills while hitting a blistering .750 clip in the set.
  • Ava Wallis dished out 21 assists, four service aces, and seven digs.
  • Kaylin Daniels chipped in with six kills and two blocks.
  • Inbal Peleg tallied a team-high 14 digs.

  • Set One: The Bulldogs got off to an early 10-4 lead and remained in front. A Zier ace trimmed the deficit to 16-11, but Bryant remained in control. The Bulldogs hit .424 in the frame and won the set 25-16.
  • Set Two: The Huskies responded back, storming out to a 9-4 lead. Bryant then responded to tie the frame up at 10. The teams traded points down the stretch with the Huskies tallying set point with blocks from Daniels and Virthe, and then Arliel sealed the 25-22 win with a kill.
  • Set Three: Northeastern stormed out to a 11-5 lead and didn't look back. Bryant trimmed the deficit down to two multiple times down the stretch, but Reck, who notched a team-high five kills in the frame, helped the Huskies secure the 25-20 victory.
  • Set Four: The hosts fought back, tallying a 12-7 lead. The Huskies chipped away at the deficit with five straight points to make it a 15-14 frame, but the Bulldogs held on to take the set 25-18.
  • Set Five: Kills from Zier and Arliel helped the Huskies to a 3-0 advantage, and Northeastern continued to hold onto the momentum. A clutch kill from Marika Virthe made it 8-6, and down the stretch the Huskies tallied five straight points capped off by a kill from Arliel to seal the match win. The Huskies hit .412 in the frame, and held Bryant to .190.
  • Arliel tallied a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs.
  • Jessica Frannea also notched a double-double with 37 assists and 11 digs.
  • Zier also had a team-high six blocks.
The Huskies will face Northern Colorado in their home opener on Thursday, September 7. First serve is slated for 5 p.m., and will stream on FloVolleyball.
