BOSTON – Derin Erdogan tallied a team-high 16 points, but the Campbell Camels (7-10, 3-4 CAA) used a big first quarter to take down the Northeastern women's basketball team (7-10, 3-5 CAA), 54-43, on Sunday afternoon at the Cabot Center.
Erdogan had a strong day, going 6-of-14 overall, tallying 13 of her points in the second half. The senior also had a team-high eight rebounds, and four assists.
Deja Bristol also headlined the Huskies with 10 points and seven rebounds.
As a team, Northeastern struggled offensively in the contest, shooting 31.5% overall, and 28.6% from three.
The Camels shot 47.8% overall (22-of-46), but 63.6% (7-of-11) in the first quarter. The team also edged the Huskies in points off turnovers (16-2), paint points (36-20), and bench points (16-9). Christabel Ezumah led the visitors with 17 points and six rebounds.
After
Yirsy Queliz got the scoring started in the first, the Camels' offense took off, tallying the next 14 points to balloon their lead up to 14-3 at the 3:08 mark. Bristol notched back-to-back layups down the stretch, but Campbell took a 16-7 lead into the second.
Gemima Motema got Northeastern's offense going in the second with a layup, but Campbell responded right back. The Huskies went on a 6-0 run, capped off by an Erdogan three to trim the deficit to 18-15 at the 6:55 mark, but the Camels closed the frame with a 6-0 run of their own to take a 26-17 advantage into halftime.
In the third, a three by
Maddie Vizza and a layup by Bristol trimmed the deficit down to six (32-26) at the 5:45 mark, but the Camels responded with six straight, and took ultimately took a 40-30 lead into the fourth.
Erdogan was unconscious with 11 of Northeastern's 13 points in the fourth, nine of which came from beyond the arc, but the Camels closed the frame on a 7-0 run to put the game out of reach for good.
The Huskies will hit the road to face the Elon Phoenix on Friday, February 2. Tip-off is slated for 11 a.m. on FloHoops.
