BOSTON – Stony Brook (8-6, 1-0) got 21 points from Tyler Stephenson-Moore and shot 54% in the second half to knock off the Northeastern men's basketball team (5-9, 0-1) on Thursday night at Matthews Arena, 62-53.
Stephenson-Moore did most of his damage in the second half, going for 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting to help the Seawolves build on what was a one-point halftime lead. He was one of three Seawolves in double figures on the night as SBU finished 38% (21-of-56) from the floor.
Northeastern couldn't find its rhythm offensively throughout the game, going 20-of-60 overall and 4-of-18 from deep.
Chris Doherty led the way with 15 points and 12 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season, while
Masai Troutman had a team-high 16 points on 6-of-11 from the floor.
Joe Pridgen added eight points to reach 1000 points for his career.
Northeastern held Stony Brook to a 2-of-14 start from the field, going on an 11-2 run to lead by as many as nine midway through the first half before the Seawolves responded with runs of 8-2 and 10-2 to take a 24-23 lead into the locker room.
Neither team could get it going offensively, with the Huskies shooting 10-of-31 overall and SBU going 7-of-30 overall. Troutman led all scorers with 11 points on 5-of-8 from the floor.
After a Doherty layup tied the game at 27 early in the second half, a 14-3 Stony Brook run over the next five minutes gave the Seawolves their largest lead of the night at 51-37 with 8:13 to go, with eight of those points coming from Stephenson-Moore and holding Northeastern to 1-of-9 from the field in the process.
The Huskies will head back on the road for a Monday matchup at Monmouth. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on the CBS Sports Network.
