BOSTON – The Northeastern men's basketball team (1-1) gave No. RV/RV Princeton (3-0) everything it could handle, taking them to the brink before the Tigers narrowly escaped with the victory in the final seconds on Sunday afternoon at Matthews Arena, 79-76.
Harold Woods (27 points, 13 rebounds) and
William Kermoury (20 points) both had career days for the Huskies, who finished the day 32-of-62 from the floor and 6-of-18 from three-point range.
Rashad King added eight points and a career high 13 assists.
In a game that saw five ties and 14 lead changes, it was the Tigers who got the last laugh with a bucket from Malik Abdullahi (eight points) with less than five seconds left before Abdullahi hit two free throws late to put Princeton up by three.
Dalen Davis dropped 25 points on 9-of-18 shooting for a Princeton team that finished 26-of-60 overall and 10-of-26 from three. He was one of four Tigers in double figures, including 12 from Xaivian Lee on 4-of-17 shooting and eight assists.
Woods could not be contained in the first half, going for 16 on 8-of-12 shooting along with eight rebounds to lead the Huskies, who shot 41% overall to trail by five at the break, 35-30.
Northeastern led for the first 10 minutes of the contest before Princeton went on a 12-0 run over three minutes, capped by a three from Davis to give the Tigers its largest lead of the half at 25-16.
The Huskies clawed back, though, closing the half by hitting six of their final eight shots to bring the deficit back to five, with
Ryan Williams going a perfect 3-of-3 off the bench.
Neither team led by more than seven points in the second half as the Huskies continued to fight on the back of Kermoury, who went for 17 points in the second half on 5-of-6 shooting (4-of-5 from three), including a three just two minutes into the half to give the hosts its first lead since midway through the first half.
The Huskies held on to the lead for most of the half before Princeton went on a 7-0 run to take a one-point lead with 2:43 to play, 71-70.
The game would remain within one possession the rest of the way, with an
LA Pratt layup putting the Huskies up 76-75 with 12 seconds left before Princeton responded with a bucket with less than five seconds left to go up for good.
