TUCSON, Ariz. – In the 2024 season opener, the No. 23 Northeastern Huskies (0-1) fell to the Arizona Wildcats (1-0) by a score of 6-1 on Friday evening at Hi Corbett Field.
- The Huskies got off to a strong start with lead off man Luke Beckstein hit a double to open the game and Mike Sirota advanced him to third on a single down the line. Tyler MacGregor opened the season's scoring with a sac-fly to lead 1-0.
- The Wildcats responded back with three hits and two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame and worked their way to a 5-1 lead by the end of the third inning.
- Senior lefty Will Jones entered the game in the third to quell the Wildcat bats and did just that, getting out the inning and providing four straight shutout innings for the Huskies to keep the lead at just four. His career high for innings pitched was three coming into the contest.
- Jones finished the evening with five full innings pitched allowing no runs on just two hits and striking out three.
- Finishing out the game was Brett Dunham, who worked the bottom of the eighth allowing just one hit and one unearned run.
- Despite the bullpen's best effort to keep the game within reach, the Huskies were unable to get anything going on offense past the first inning. Macgregor's RBI and Alex Lane's two hits in three at-bats were the stand outs for the Husky bats on the night.
The two teams meet again for game two on Saturday, February 17 at 3 p.m. EST, 1 p.m. MST at Hi Corbett Field. The game will once again stream on Pac12 Plus at Pac12.com.
