HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Derin Erdogan tallied a team-high 12 points, but the Hofstra Pride (9-14, 3-9 CAA) used a big first quarter to take down the Northeastern women's basketball team (8-15, 4-9 CAA), 66-46, at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Erdogan tallied 10 of her points in the second half, and had a team-high seven rebounds and four assists.
Maddie Vizza also headlined Northeastern with 11 points, nine of which came from deep.
As a team, the Huskies shot 40% overall (18-of-45), and 52.4% in the second half.
The Pride shot 40.7% overall (10-of-28), and 30% (6-of-20), but outscored the Huskies 27-5 in the first quarter. Emma Von Essen led three Hofstra players in double-digits with 22 points.
Hofstra came out firing in the first, making five of its seven field goals, taking a 12-2 lead at the 6:26 mark. The hosts shot 64.3% overall (9-of-14) and 57.1% (4-of-7) from deep in the frame, taking a 22-point lead into the second.
The Pride continued to push the pace in the second with four straight points, ballooning their lead to 31-5 at the 8:30 mark. A layup by
Sophia Carlisle and a three by Vizza cut into the deficit, but Hofstra continued to remain in front. The hosts ended the frame with four straight points, and took a 39-17 lead into halftime.
After Hofstra got the third started with six straight points, Vizza responded back with her second three of the game to trim the deficit to 45-20 at the 7:18 mark. A jumper by Erdogan and a layup by
Deja Bristol made it 50-31 with 1:17 to go in the frame, but Hofstra held onto a double-digit lead going into the fourth.
Northeastern tallied four straight points to get the visitors going in the fourth, capped off by a three by
Marian Turnbull to trim the deficit to 55-37 at the 7:51 mark. Hofstra though, went on a 7-0 run midway through the stanza to put the game out of reach for good.
The Huskies will head to Stony Brook on Sunday, February 25. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m. on FloHoops.
