Huskies Advance To CAA Second Round With 66-60 Victory Over UNCW

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Sophia Carlisle had 15 points, and Derin Erdogan was one assist shy of a triple-double to lead the No. 11 seed Northeastern women's basketball team (10-16) to a 66-60 win over No. 14 seed UNCW (5-25) in the CAA Tournament First Round on Wednesday night at the Entertainment & Sports Arena.

Carlisle had a stellar night with a career-high in points and had seven rebounds. Erdogan, however, had a performance to remember with 14 points, a career-high 10 rebounds, and nine assists. Yirsy Queliz also tallied double-digits for the Huskies with 10 points, four rebounds and two steals.

As a team, the Huskies shot 46.2% overall (24-of-52) in the contest, and all seven players tallied at least two buckets in the victory. Northeastern also held UNCW to 34.4% shooting (22-of-64), and edged the Seahawks in paint points (32-20), second chance points (12-8), and bench points (14-6).

After baskets by Carlisle and Deja Bristol got the Huskies off to a 4-2 lead in the first, UNCW then tallied the next eight points to take a 10-4 advantage at the 6:39 mark. Erdogan ended the run with back-to-back layups to trim the deficit to 10-8, and NU kept the momentum going with two-straight triples by Queliz and Marian Turnbull to give the Huskies a 14-12 advantage going into the second. Northeastern held UNCW to 27.8% overall (5-of-18) in the frame.

After a quick bucket by the Seahawks tied the score up to start the second, NU notched six straight points, highlighted by back-to-back layups by Carlisle. A basket by Halle Idowu gave NU a 28-23 advantage at the 3:50 mark, but the Seahawks fought back with a 9-0 run. Erdogan ended the scoring by the visitors with a jumper, and then Turnbull tallied her second triple of the game to give the Huskies a 33-32 lead at halftime. NU was strong offensively in the frame, shooting 64.3% overall (9-of-14).

The third quarter was highlighted by defense, as both teams combined for just seven field goals in the frame. The Seahawks took a 41-37 lead at the 6:55 mark, but Maddie Vizza responded with a clutch three to keep the game within reach at one. UNCW once again took the advantage back a few minutes later, but Vizza tallied another triple to knot the game up at 43. Both teams ultimately remained tied at 45 going into the fourth.

Vizza's three-point shooting continued to be strong in the final quarter, as the senior notched her third trey of the game to give NU a 51-45 advantage with 7:54 to go. Vizza tallied all nine of her points in the second half, and Queliz had five of the Huskies' 10 points from the charity stripe to put the game out of reach for good.

The Huskies will take on No. 6 Towson in the Second Round on Thursday, March 14. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m., and will stream on FloHoops.
