MACON, Ga. – In game one of their weekend set, the Northeastern Huskies (3-3) fell to the Mercer Bears (9-1) at OrthoGeorgia Park on Saturday afternoon by a score of 6-3.
- Northeastern started the game out hot with one run on three hits in the opening frame. After a walk to Mike Sirota, Alex Lane hit a two-out single into the left, and Sirota came home on an RBI single from Carmelo Musacchia to lead 1-0.
- The Huskies extended the lead in the top of the fourth with a leadoff solo home run by Matt Brinker, his first of the season, to lead 2-0.
- The Bears put up a crooked number in the bottom of the fifth, taking a 5-2 lead after a bases loaded walk followed by a grand slam.
- NU cut into the lead in the seventh with an RBI ground out by Alex Lane, scoring MacGregor from third.
- The Bears got one back in the bottom of the eighth to lead 6-3.
- Will Jones was once again stellar out of the bullpen, blanking Mercer in the fifth through seventh innings. His final line was 4.1 innings of work with one earned run on three hits, no walks, and six punch-outs, a season-high for the senior.
- Jones was relieved by Cooper McGrath, who notched the final two outs of the eighth inning allowing just one hit, and striking out one batter.
- Northeastern went 5-for-14 (.357) with two outs on the day, and led in the hits column, but left nine runners on base.
The two teams wrap up the series on Sunday, March 3
rd with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
