Sirota, Colleran Drafted On Day Two of MLB Draft

FORT WORTH, Texas – Northeastern University center fielder Mike Sirota and right-handed pitcher Dennis Colleran both had their names called on day two of the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft, with Sirota going to the Cincinnati Reds in the third round, and Colleran going to the Kansas City Royals in the seventh round on Monday afternoon.

Sirota, who was picked 87th overall by the Reds, finished his junior season with a career batting average of .324, with 177 hits and 111 RBIs. Presently, Sirota owns the single-season program record for runs scored (73, 2023), and walks (59, 2024) while currently owning the third-highest on-base percentage (.457) in program history behind Carlos Peña (.462, 1997-98) and Paul DiPillo (.494, 1983-86). At 87th overall, Sirota is the third-highest placement in program history, behind first baseman Carlos Peña (1998, 10th overall, Texas) and pitcher Adam Ottavino (2006, 30th overall, St. Louis). Sirota becomes just the fifth Husky to be picked in the top 100 overall picks, joining Peña, Ottavino, Aaron Civale (2016, 92nd overall, Cleveland) and Neil McPhee (1965, 94th overall, Minnesota). This is Sirota's second career MLB Draft selection, after being selected by the Dodgers in 2021 in the 16th round out of high school. He's the first position player drafted from the Huskies since that 2021 draft when outfielders Ben Malgeri and Jared Dupere were also selected in that draft, and is the first position player since Carlos Peña to be selected in the top 100 picks.

Colleran, who was taken 197th overall by the Royals, bounced back from a season-ending injury his freshman season with a strong junior year in 2024, working 40.2 innings in 20 appearances, striking out 46 batters. He finished off the 2024 season with 70 career strikeouts in 62.2 innings pitched, including nine scoreless relief appearances this past year. Colleran continues a strong showing for the Northeastern pitching staff in the MLB Draft – at least one Northeastern pitcher has been drafted in every MLB draft since 2019, with three going in each of the 2019 and 2022 drafts. He's the highest Northeastern pitcher drafted since Justin Hedrick in 2004 (190th overall), surpassing his former teammate Cam Schlittler who was also a seventh-round pick in 2022 (220th overall).

Sirota became the 60th MLB draft pick in program history, with Colleran becoming the 61st. They are the 16th and 17th drafted Huskies under head coach Mike Glavine. The Huskies have had at least one draftee in each of the last seven drafts.

Day three of the MLB draft begins at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 16th, on MLB.com.
