Northeastern Defeats North Carolina A&T In Four Sets

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Three Huskies tallied double-digit kills as the Northeastern volleyball team (5-7, 3-1 CAA) bounced back with a four-set win against the North Carolina A&T Aggies (8-4, 3-1 CAA) on Saturday afternoon at Corbett Sports Center.
 
Kinley Gomez paced the NU offense with 13 kills and 16 digs, recording her fourth double-double of the season. Brynn Smith also picked up her second double-double with 12 kills and 18 digs, and Beatrice Gennari tied a career-high with 10 kills on .588 hitting.
 
In addition to her strong performance on offense, Gennari led on defense with six blocks. Nadia Koanui also had a stellar day in the back row with 25 digs.
  • Set One: Northeastern got off to a 10-7 advantage, capped off by a kill by Gennari. NU continued to push the pace, tallying two straight points to extend the lead to 16-11. Down the stretch, the Huskies went on a 4-0 run highlighted by two blocks from Gennari to go up 22-16. The Aggies made a late push with eight straight points, but NU responded with the next four to take the set at 26-24.
  • Set Two: Both teams traded points, with neither leading by more than two. After being knotted up at 10 though, the hosts tallied 10 of the next 12 points to take a 20-12 advantage. North Carolina A&T took the set win at 25-16.
  • Set Three: NU got off to a quick 5-2 lead, capped off by a kill from Gomez. The Aggies though, fought back to take a 14-12 lead. A few points later, Northeastern pulled ahead at 16-14 after two more kills from Gomez. Down the stretch, Gennari was the story for NU, tallying three of her five kills in the frame, including one that sealed the set win at 25-22.
  • Set Four: After being knotted up at eight, the Huskies tallied three straight points to take a 11-8 lead. NU continued to hold onto the advantage, tallying four straight points (16-11). The Aggies though, made a late comeback with five straight points to pull ahead at 19-18. The Huskies had set point at 24-22, but the hosts tallied the next two points to continue play. A kill by Loehr and an ace by Gabby Reeves then sealed the set win at 26-24.
  • Loehr chipped in with five kills and five blocks.
  • Arina Sosinovica dished out a team-high 17 assists and Carly Cooper added 16 assists.
  • Reeves notched nine digs and an ace (match-winning point).
  • As a team, Northeastern outblocked the Aggies 12 to seven.
  • The match featured 28 ties, and 16 lead changes.
 The Huskies will return home to host William & Mary on October 4-5.
