Huskies Upset No. 11 UMass In 4-2 Road Victory

Amherst, Mass. – Four different Huskies found the back of the net as the Northeastern men's hockey team upset No. 11 UMass, 4-2, on at the Mullins Center on Friday night.

Nine skaters etched their names onto the scoresheet for Northeastern, while junior Lawton Zacher made 25 saves in goal.

Just 1:49 into the game, Northeastern jumped out to a 1-0 lead as three Huskies notched their first points of the season. Off a feed from freshman Amine Hajibi, sophomore Jack Henry's one-timer at the point deflected off sophomore Griffin Erdman in front and slipped past the UMass netminder.

In similar fashion, Northeastern struck early to open the second period, just 1:12 in. After a UMass defenseman mishandled the puck at the blue line, sophomore Joe Connor pounced, racing in alone on a breakaway and lifting a shot top shelf for his third goal of the season to make it 2-0 Huskies.

The Minutemen made it a one-goal game at the 6:51 mark in the second period on Bo Cosman's first of the year when he snapped a shot home from the left dot.

Northeastern regained its two-goal lead late in the second period. A strong poke check from freshman Jacob Mathieu freed up space for Tyler Fukakusa to spring Giacomo Martino on a breakaway, and the freshman buried his second of the season with a shot over the goaltender's shoulder.

UMass pulled back within one, 3-2, with 11:30 remaining in regulation, as Jack Musa capitalized on the power play.

With 1:11 left on the clock, the Minutemen pulled their goaltender in a last push to even the score. As UMass tried to clear the puck, it landed on the stick of senior Vinny Borgesi, who slid a pass to junior Dylan Hryckowian in the left circle for a one-timer that sealed the 4-2 victory.

The Huskies return to Matthews Arena on Saturday, Oct. 25, hosting the Denver Pioneers at 7 p.m. as part of Friends and Family Weekend.
