BOSTON, Mass. – Northeastern (7-10, 3-5 CAA) fell to conference opponent Charleston (13-7, 7-3 CAA) in four sets Sunday afternoon.
Charleston def. Northeastern: 25-18, 25-22, 25-19, 25-20
- Set One: The home Huskies exploded to a 7-2 advantage in the first set of the afternoon, with the trio of Valentina Meirelles, Svenja Rodenbüsch, and Beatrice Gennari each tallying big kills. Northeastern extended their lead to 18-11 on another kill from Gennari. Charleston made a late push bringing the score to 23-17, but one final swing from Meirelles gave Northeastern the 1-0 advantage.
- Set Two: The two squads kept the score even throughout the first half of the second set, with the Cougars taking a 15-12 lead at the media timeout. Northeastern battled with the visitors, keeping the score within four as Emma Rowell joined the kill count. A late kill from Valentina Meirelles evened the score at 22, but dominate attacking from Charleston pushed them to a 25-22 victory.
- Set Three: The third set opened in an even battle with the teams blocking each other back and forth. Northeastern pushed a 15-13 media timeout lead on a monster block from Meirelles. The Cougars came out of the media timeout systematically, running a back-to-back kill system to tie the set at 16s. The visiting team kept momentum in the remainder of the set, winning 25-19.
- Set Four: The most exciting opening occurred in the fourth set of the day, with the teams exchanging impressive swings through the 10th point. Charleston found breathing room in the latter half of the set, taking a 19-12 advantage on attacks from their setter. The Huskies attempted a late comeback at set point, bringing the game within five, but a final kill from the Cougars set their victory.
- Svenja Rodenbüsch led the offensive strike with a double-double of 16 kills and 14 digs, while also tabbing two blocks.
- Nadia Koanui tallied a team-high 27 digs to go alongside four assists.
- Sofia King led the passing with 21 assists and eight digs.
- As a unit, Northeastern tallied 48 kills, 68 digs, 49 assists, and seven service aces.
The Huskies return to the road next weekend, traveling to Williamsburg, Virginia for a pair of conference games at William & Mary. The first of the two matches will be on Friday, Oct. 19, with a 5 p.m. start time on FloCollege.
