Storrs, Conn. – Despite two third period goals, the No. 11 Northeastern men's hockey team fell short, 4-2, to No. 14/13 UConn in their series opener on Friday night.
Following a scoreless first period, UConn tallied two goals in the span of 11 seconds to take a 2-0 lead in the middle frame.
Northeastern came out hot in the third period and responded with two goals of their own to make it a 2-2 game. What started with a shot from senior Dylan Finaly led to a clean-up from freshman
Jacob Mathieu behind the red line. The rookie found freshman
Dylan Compton at the point where he buried his first career goal to make it a 2-1 game.
Just over the halfway point of the third period, freshman
Jack Pechar scored his first collegiate goal, tying the game 2-2. Alongside junior
Eli Sebastian on a two-on-one breakaway, Pechar sent the puck home, going five-hole on the UConn netminder. Sophomore
Griffin Erdman also picked up an assist on the goal.
In the final six minutes of the game, UConn tallied two more goals, including an empty-netter, to take the 4-2 win.
Junior
Lawton Zacher finished with 31 saves in 58:45 minutes of action. Mathieu and sophomore
Joe Connor tied for a game-high two blocks, while Erdman and Pechar tied for a game-high five shots on goal.
NU is back at Matthews Arena tomorrow night (Nov 15) for Military Appreciation night as they look to close out their series with UConn.
