BOSTON --The No. 11 Northeastern men's hockey team built an early lead, but ultimately dropped, 4-3, in overtime to No. 14/13 UConn on Saturday night.
Northeastern opened scoring midway through the first when freshman
Dylan Compton buried his second goal in as many games. Mirroring his finish from the series opener, Compton found space at the point and snapped home a clean shot. Junior
Dylan Hryckowian and senior
Vinny Borgesi picked up the assists, putting the Huskies ahead 1-0.
The Huskies doubled their lead later in the frame thanks to strong pressure around the crease. Sophomore
Joe Connor fired a shot from the slot that deflected off freshman
Jacob Mathieu, creating a rebound that rookie
Giacomo Martino quickly cleaned up. Martino's put-back marked his team-leading sixth tally of the season and pushed NU's advantage to 2-0.
NU kept rolling into the second period, extending the lead to 3-0 at the 16:27 mark. A UConn defenseman's clearing attempt was intercepted by sophomore
Griffin Erdman, who wasted no time stepping into the slot and snapping a wrister pas the goaltender.
UConn pushed back the rest of the way, scoring three unanswered goals to erase NU's lead and force overtime. In the extra frame, UConn's Joey Muldowney ultimately buried the game-winner to seal a 4-3 final.
Netminder
Lawton Zacher collected 30 saves in 62:29 minutes of action. Borgesi tallied a game-high five blocks, while he and Hryckowian tied for a team-high three shots on goal.
The Huskies turn their attention to another home-and-home Hockey East series against the Boston University Terriers next weekend. The series will open at Matthews Arena on Friday (Nov. 21) and finish at Agganis Arena on Saturday (Nov. 22).
