BOSTON – The No. 14 Northeastern men's hockey team rode strong performances from freshman
Jacob Mathieu (2a) and junior
Lawton Zacher to secure a 2-0 shutout over Stonehill on Friday night at Matthews Arena.
With NU on the power play,
Tyler Fukakusa netted his first goal in the Husky sweater at the 14:17 mark in the opening period when a shot from the dot turned into a net front scramble. The 5-11 forward tucked it home on the doorstep to make it an early 1-0 lead. Assists on the goal came from freshmen
Amine Hajibi and Mathieu.
After a scoreless second period, Northeastern extended its advantage late in regulation, doubling the lead with 4:55 remaining. Senior
Vinny Borgesi delivered his second goal in as many weekends, taking a feed from junior
Dylan Hryckowian in the slot before spinning and firing a shot that found the back of the net. Mathieu earned his second assist of the night after winning the faceoff that initiated the sequence.
Lawton Zacher sealed the result with a standout performance, earning his third shutout of the season and his fourth consecutive victory. Zacher turned aside all 36 shots he faced over the full 60 minutes to backstop the Huskies.
The Huskies close out homecoming weekend tomorrow night (Nov. 8) in game two against the Stonehill Skyhawks at 7 p.m.
