NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Powered by balanced scoring from Yirsy Quéliz, Morgan Matthews, Camryn Collins and Nariyah Simmons, the Northeastern women's basketball team (1-1) defeated the Yale Bulldogs (0-1), 75-64, on the road Thursday evening at John J. Lee Amphitheater.
The Huskies had four players score in double figures, led by Quéliz, who had 15 points, four rebounds and one assist. Matthews added 15 points, three rebounds and three assists and Collins chipped in as well with 14 points and two rebounds. Simmons notched 14 points, five rebounds and one assist in the winning effort.
Northeastern out-rebounded Yale 42-38 in Thursday's game, paced by Alyssa Staten's nine boards. The Huskies also pulled down 16 offensive rebounds and scored 11 second chance points.
The Northeastern defense forced 19 Yale turnovers, converting those takeaways into 18 points on the offensive end of the floor. The Huskies dominated in transition, scoring 18 fast break points compared to just four for the Bulldogs.
Northeastern jumped out to an early lead, building a 21-13 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
Yale battled back in the second quarter, outscoring the Huskies 23-19 to narrow Northeastern's lead to 40-36 heading into halftime.
Northeastern seized control in the third quarter, going on a dominant 23-11 run to build a commanding 63-47 lead entering the fourth after scoring the final 16 points of the quarter. The Huskies knocked down two three-pointers in the period to account for six of its 23 points, and took advantage of its opportunities in the paint, scoring 12 of its 23 third quarter points in the paint.
Yale trimmed its deficit in the final period, outscoring Northeastern 17-12, but the Huskies' third quarter surge proved too much to overcome as Northeastern cruised to the 75-64 victory, its first win in the series since December 6, 1983.
