PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – In a Saturday double header at Centennial Park, Northeastern (3-1) swept Indiana State (3-3) by scores of 7-0 in game one, and 5-0 in game two.
Five Northeastern pitchers combined to throw 18 shutout innings on the day, which is the first double header shout out for Northeastern pitching since the 2020 season. NU shut out an Indiana State team that came into the weekend batting .354 as a team, and was averaging 15 runs per game on the young season. The Husky offense roared to life in game one, scoring five runs in the first two innings of the double header, after tallying four in the opening weekend series at Charlotte.
Game 1 – Northeastern 7, Indiana State 0
- Northeastern struck first in the opening inning, after leadoff man Carmelo Musacchia was hit by a pitch and stole second base. With two outs, Alex Lane hit a single up the middle to score Musacchia for the 1-0 lead.
- The bats came to life in the second inning, after a pair of walks to Ryan Gerety, and Jack Doyle after Gerety stole second. A Gregory Bozzo RBI single brought in two, and the lineup flipped back to Musacchia, who hammered a long ball over the left field wall for the 5-0 lead.
- Northeastern added another in the fifth after a Jack Goodman single and steal, and a two-out Ryan Gerety single through the left side. In the sixth it was back to back hits from Harrison Feinberg (double) and Gregory Bozzo (single, RBI) to extend the lead to 7-0.
- Husky hurler Aiven Cabral earned his first win of the year going five scoreless innings while allowing just four hits and a walk. He struck out two batters on the afternoon.
- Taking the mound to start the sixth was Charlie Walker, who struck out the first five batters he faced on his way to a perfect three innings of relief work. He finished his day with six punch-outs, a new single-game career high.
- Closing out the ninth was Joseph Hauser, who collected two fly outs and a strike out to close the book on game one.
- It was the first shutout of the season for the Husky pitching staff in just its third game. NU pitchers combined for nine strikeouts and just one free base.
Game 2 – Northeastern 5, Indiana State 0
- The Huskies once again jumped out in front with a one-out, solo home run from the nine-hole hitter Justin Bosland over the right field wall to lead 1-0 in the bottom of the third.
- The game settled down with neither side getting much going from the fourth to the eighth – the Sycamores got 3 baserunners in that stretch on a hit, a walk, and an error, and NU got two hits in the sixth but were unable to capitalize.
- Northeastern got its insurance in the bottom of the eighth with a four-run inning. After a walk to Bosland and a hit by pitch to Musacchia, Cam Maldonado hit a back side home run to right center on an 0-1 pitch to extend the lead to four runs.
- After a Jack Goodman double, Matt Brinker hit an RBI single up the middle with two outs to make it 5-0 after eight.
- Will Jones spun a gem in his second start of the season, working six scoreless inning with one hit allowed, one walk, and six strikeouts. He moves to 2-0 on the young season.
- In relief it was grad. transfer Jordan Gottesman working the final three innings, entering with a one-run lead. He worked the final three innings allowing just one walk, and striking out six of his own, for his first save of the season.
- Northeastern pitchers recorded 10+ strikeouts in a game for the second time this season, and the second weekend in a row.
- The game two win gives NU its first series win of the season, after splitting 1-1 with Charlotte last weekend.
- The double header double shutout is the first in five years, to the day. On February 22, 2020, the Huskies swept a double header at South Florida, winning game one by a score of 10-0, and game two by a score of 2-0.
The two teams wrap up their series on Sunday, February 23 with game three taking place at 12 p.m. at Centennial Park.
