NU Upsets No. 1 BC To Advance To The Hockey East Semifinals

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — The Northeastern men's hockey team upset No. 1 Boston College, 3-1, to advance to the Hockey East semifinals at TD Garden, becoming the first No. 9-seed to make the semifinal round in league history.
  • Both teams went scoreless through the first period with Boston College outshooting Northeastern, 13-7.
  • The Huskies would strike twice in the second period to carry a 2-0 lead into the intermission. With his seventh career goal against BC, junior Cam Lund buried a snipe from the slot among five BC skaters. Graduate student Jake Higgins and junior Jack Williams tallied the assists on the goal.
  • Only 2:09 minutes later, Northeastern doubled their lead. Freshman Joe Connor swiftly cleaned up a rebound let up by BC netminder Jacob Fowler for his seventh goal of the season. The initial shot came from senior Cristophe Tellier with the secondary helper from senior Ryan McGuire.
  • Northeastern held a two-goal lead until the 2:34 mark in the third period when BC tacked on an extra attacker goal to make it 2-1.
  • With BC on the power-play and with their goalie pulled for a 6-on-4 advantage, the puck bounced into open ice for McGuire to send it into the empty net for the 3-1 win and his second point of the night.
  • In this third career playoff win, sophomore goaltender Cameron Whitehead was outstanding in net, finishing with 30 saves.
  • Lund and Connor tied for a team-high four shots, while junior Vinny Borgesi tied the game-high three blocks.
The Huskies are matched with the Maine Black Bears for the Hockey East semifinals on Thursday, March 20th at 7:30 p.m. at TD Garden, marking the two programs fourth meeting of the season.
