SAN DIEGO – In a Friday night series opener at Tony Gwynn Stadium, the Northeastern Huskies (5-5) took down the San Diego State Aztecs (4-10) by a score of 10-4 in game one of the weekend set.
- Northeastern struck first as Carmelo Musacchia led off the game with a triple to right field – he was scored just three pitches later off the bat of Ryan Gerety on an RBI ground-out.
- After the Aztecs tallied a triple of their own in the bottom of the second, an RBI double knocked in the tying run.
- Four runs came across for the Huskies in the third inning, all with two outs. After a Cam Maldonado single and steal of second base, a two-out RBI single from Jack Goodman sent Maldonado home from second to lead 2-1.
- Goodman would score on another RBI single, this one from Harrison Feinberg, for the 3-1 lead.
- Feinberg would score on a home run to right field by Will Fosberg, the second of his career in as many hits, to lead 5-1.
- Northeastern extended the lead in the fourth on a two-RBI single from Alex Lane to left field, scoring Gerety and Maldonado to lead 7-1.
- SDSU got one back in the fourth, tallying an RBI double to left field.
- In the fifth, Feinberg collected another RBI with a solo shot to left field – the Huskies would lead 8-2 after five.
- Northeastern tallied its final two runs in the sixth inning on a Will Fosberg RBI single and a Jack Goodman RBI double to lead 10-2.
- San Diego State got two runs in the bottom of the ninth to cut the lead down to six, on a double down the left field line, and a fielding error.
- Starting pitcher Jordan Gottesman worked the opening 3.1 innings with four hits, three walks, and two runs allowed, while tying his season-high with six strikeouts in the outing.
- Picking up the win out of the bullpen was Charlie Walker, working 1.2 innings allowing no hits, runs, or walks while punching out one batter. His record on the season is 1-0.
- Northeastern got 2.1 shutout innings from Andrew Basel, who allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out two. His final inning was finished by Nick Coniglio, who got out of a bases loaded situation allowing no runs to come across with a ground ball double play to second base.
- James Morice had the final inning, striking out the last batter of the game.
- The Huskies kept innings alive with seven hits (.438) with two outs, and eight two-out RBIs.
- NU's pitching staff posted another 10-strikeout performance, while the offense posted the first 10-run performance of the season.
The series continues on Saturday, March 8
th, when the two teams play a double header starting at 12 p.m. PST (3 p.m. EST), as Thursday's series opener was rained out. Both games of the double header can be heard on WRBB Sports.
