Northeastern Scores Big Early, Takes Down CCSU 12-5

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – The Northeastern University baseball team (22-9) took down Central Connecticut State (18-5) by a score of 12-5 on Wednesday afternoon at CCSU Baseball Stadium.

The Huskies put up seven runs in the opening two innings, and coasted to five more runs in the final six, to lead wire to wire against the Blue Devils, snapping their seven-game winning streak.

  • Northeastern struck first in the opening frame with a one-out walk to Cam Maldonado and an opposite field home run by Harrison Feinberg, clearing the right field wall for the 2-0 lead.
  • After CCSU's lead runner reached on a dropped fly ball, he was advanced to third and scored on a sacrifice fly to make it 2-1.
  • The Huskies plated five runs in the second inning, which was kicked off by a lead off homer to right by Carmelo Musacchia.
  • After the home run, Ryan Gerety laid down a bunt that was thrown away by the catcher, allowing him to reach first, and then advanced all the way to third on a failed pick off attempt. He would score on an RBI ground out by Gregory Bozzo for the 4-1 lead.
  • After a two-out single by Jack Doyle, he stole second and scored on a Maldonado RBI double down the left field line for the fifth Huskies run of the game.
  • Feinberg and Will Fosberg would each reach on a walk, and both would move up a base on another failed pick off attempt. Both would go on to score on an RBI single by Alex Lane to through left side of the infield for the 7-1 lead.
  • A pair of doubles for CCSU in the third would add another run to their total, cutting the NU lead down to five.
  • The top of the order once again delivered in the fourth, with a lead off walk to Doyle and a single by Maldonado to get Doyle over to third. A sac-fly from Feinberg, his third RBI of the day, scored Doyle for the 8-2 lead.
  • Lane would also add to his RBI total for the day with an infield single that scored Maldonado from third for the 9-2 lead.
  • In the top of the seventh, Ryan Gerety led off the inning with a triple, and scored on a wild pitch with one out for Northeastern's 10th run of the game.
  • CCSU would answer in the bottom of the frame, loading the bases with no outs, then scoring on a pair of ground outs before the third one ended the inning.
  • Northeastern tacked on two more in the ninth, leading off the inning with a Ryan Gerety walk. He would steal second and score on a RBI double down the right field line by Bozzo.
  • Bozzo moved to third on a fly out and would score on a Jack Doyle grounder to the right side of the infield.
  • Central Connecticut tried one last rally in the bottom of the ninth, tallying an RBI single and loading the bases with just one out, but a game-ending 4-6-3 double play ended the threat.
  • Max Gitlin delivered another solid midweek start, working five full innings allowing just two runs, one earned, on five hits. He walked two and struck out one, as he left the game with a healthy 9-2 lead, earning his fourth win of the season (4-1).
  • A quartet of bullpen pitchers strung along some solid outings to keep the game from getting close – Carson Walsh (0H, 0R, 1K), Jack Cropper (2H, 2R), Andrew Rogovic (0H, 0R, 1K) and Joseph Hauser (3H, 1R, 1K) finished out the game strong for Northeastern.

The Huskies begin an eight-game homestand this Friday against Hofstra for a three-game weekend series.
