STORRS, Conn. -- The No. 25 Northeastern Huskies (42-9) traveled to UConn (33-19) and earned a 7-1 midweek victory on Tuesday evening at Elliot Ballpark.
The Huskies scored in four different innings, including a three-run ninth to put the game away, while receiving a dominant pitching performance from starter
Max Gitlin and reliever
Jack Bowery.
Chris Walsh and
Cam Maldonado each drove in a pair of runs to lead the Northeastern offense, which collected 10 hits in the victory.
- Northeastern struck first in the second inning when Matt Brinker reached on a single and stole second. After advancing to third on a passed ball, he scored along with Gregory Bozzo (walk) on Chris Walsh's two-run double to left field for the 2-0 lead.
- The Huskies added another run in the third inning after Harrison Feinberg doubled to right center and scored on Brinker's two-out RBI single through the right side to extend the lead to 3-0.
- UConn broke through in the bottom of the fourth after a one-out triple to right field which was followed up by a wild pitch which allowed the runner to score and cut the deficit to 3-1.
- Northeastern answered in the sixth inning when Brinker reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, and scored on Gregory Bozzo's RBI single to left field, making it 4-1.
- The Huskies put the game away in the ninth inning, plating three more runs to secure the victory. After Bozzo singled and advanced on Walsh's sacrifice bunt, Ryan Gerety walked to put two runners on.
- Cam Maldonado then delivered a two-run double down the right field line, scoring both Bozzo and Gerety to push the lead to 6-1.
- Maldonado would score the seventh run on a dropped fly ball in shallow right, resulting in an error on the second baseman.
- Starting pitcher Max Gitlin improved to 8-1 on the season with another stellar outing, working six innings while allowing just one run on three hits with no walks and five strikeouts.
- Jack Bowery earned his fourth save of the season, tossing three scoreless innings with two strikeouts. He induced seven ground ball outs in his efficient relief appearance.
- The win sets a new program record for consecutive wins, surpassing the previous record of 20 straight wins which was set in 1991 and tied in 2021. It's the longest win streak in the NCAA this season, just passing Tennessee's 20-game streak to open the season.
The Huskies wrap up the regular season this weekend against North Carolina A&T in a three-game series at Friedman Diamond. That series kicks off on Thursday afternoon, May 15
