MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – In their first game of the 2025 CAA Baseball Championship, the top-seeded No. 19 Northeastern Huskies (46-9) took down four-seed College of Charleston (35-21) by a score of 6-0 at the Ballpark at Patriots Point on Thursday afternoon.
Starting pitcher
Will Jones won his program-record 11
th game of the season (11-0), posting another shutout against the Cougars, while
Carmelo Musacchia (3-for-4, 2 RBI),
Harrison Feinberg (1-for-2, 1 RBI) and
Matt Brinker (2-for-4, 2 RBI) all homered in separate innings to continuously extend the lead in the middle innings.
- Northeastern struck first by putting up two runs in the opening inning after loading the bases with no outs. After a Ryan Gerety single, and walks to Cam Maldonado and Harrison Feinberg, a sacrifice fly by Jack Goodman in shallow foul territory was enough to advance all runners, scoring Gerety for the 1-0 lead.
- Carmelo Musacchia followed up goodman with an RBI single through the left side to score Maldonado. Musacchia would steal second, but the inning would end before he or Feinberg could make it home.
- Leading off the third, Harrison Feinberg hit a solo shot to straightaway center field for the 3-0 lead.
- The Huskies got another solo shot in the bottom of the fifth, with a leadoff opposite field homer by Carmelo Musacchia, making it 4-0.
- With Jack Goodman on first base after a walk in the seventh inning, Matt Brinker hit NU's third homer of the game, a two-run shot to left field, to lead 6-0.
- Will Jones blanked Charleston for six more innings, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out two batters. He earned his 11th win of the season, which sets a new single-season program record that has stood since 1994. Peter Schultz won 10 games in that season, and the record was tied by Sean Mellen in 2018, before Jones and Aiven Cabral met that mark this season.
- Earning a three-inning save was Charlie Walker, allowing just one hit in the final three innings with a pair of K's, earning his team-leading seventh save of the season.
- The shutout marks NU's nation-leading 17th of the season and is now tied for fifth all-time in NCAA D1 shutouts. The Husky defense has not allowed a run against Charleston this season, spanning 34 defensive innings.
- It was the fourth shutout of the season for the duo of Jones and Walker, and their second away from Friedman Diamond.
- The Huskies have now won 25 straight games dating back to April 6th, extending the nation's longest hitting streak.
The Huskies will await the winner of Thursday's late game between #2 UNCW and #3 Campbell – they'll face either the Seahawks or the Camels on Friday night, May 23
rd at. 7 p.m. at Patriots Point.
