TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Despite bringing the potential go-ahead run to the plate twice in the ninth inning, the No. 19 Northeastern Huskies (49-11) were eliminated from the Tallahassee Regional by Mississippi St. (36-22), falling by a final score of 3-2 at Dick Howser Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
- MSU struck first in the opening inning, getting a pair of singles through the middle, an RBI double off the right field wall, and an RBI ground out to lead 2-0 after one.
- The Husky defense settled in for the next three innings keeping MSU off the scoreboard while scattering six more hits, keeping the game close for the offense.
- Northeastern broke the no-hitter in the top of the fifth inning with a one-out single by Carmelo Musacchia. After stealing second, he was driven in by an Alex Lane RBI single to cut the lead to 2-1.
- The Bulldogs extended the lead back to two runs with a sac fly, after a pair of singles put runners on the corners. MSU led 3-1 going to the sixth.
- After a Jack Goodman leadoff double to start the top of the seventh, but was stuck there as the Huskies hit into two outs. Then Alex Lane reached on a four-pitch walk, and Gregory Bozzo reached on a hit-by-pitch to load the bases.
- The next batter, Jack Doyle, saw a five-pitch RBI walk to bring in Goodman from third, cutting the lead to 3-2 before MSU got out of the inning.
- Northeastern got a pair of base runners on in the final frame, but couldn't get either to second, falling by the final score of 3-2.
- Starting pitcher Aiven Cabral allowed nine hits, but held MSU to just three runs on the day, keeping the game within striking distance. He struck out one batter before handing over the ball to Cooper McGrath.
- In relief, McGrath was able to control the Bulldogs' offense, allowing just two hits and two walks with runs past the fifth inning sac fly. He stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth with a strikeout and ground out.
- Taking the ball in the eighth was Brett Dunham, who allowed a pair of singles but ended the inning with a swinging strike out and two fly outs to keep the Northeastern bats within striking distance.
Northeastern finishes the season with the most wins in program history, conference history, and their first NCAA Regional win since 1973. Mississippi State advances to the Regional Championship against the hosting team, No. 6 Florida State.
