DURHAM, N.H. – The Northeastern volleyball team (1-0) picked up its first victory of the season, taking down the Saint Peter's Peacocks (0-1) in four sets on day one of the Holly Young Invitational hosted by New Hampshire.
Northeastern def. Saint Peter's: 23-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-19
- Set One: The opening set saw a strong battle between the two teams with Saint Peter's eventually getting the edge in the home stretch. Northeastern led the set with 14 kills and three blocks
- Set Two: The Peacocks led 10-4, but the Huskies chipped away at the deficit, taking the lead with two kills from Valentina Meirelles to make it 13-11. Saint Peter's responded back with the next point before Northeastern would go on an eight-point run and eventually secure the set, 25-21.
- Set Three: Four Huskies helped write the story for NU in the third set. Kaylin Daniels, Beatrice Gennari, Elle Lucas and Valentina Meirelles each tallied four kills to propel the Huskies to a 2-1 advantage. Northeastern took an early lead and after a 10-10 tie, they went on a five-point run to hold the lead for the remainder of the set.
- Set Four: Despite an early advantage for the Peacocks, ultimately the Huskies went on another five-point streak midway through the set to make it 17-10. Northeastern earned three-straight kills before the final kill of the match came from Meirelles to make it a 25-19 final.
- Nadia Koanui tallied a game-high 17 digs.
- Valentina Meirelles chipped in with 34 total attacks, 15 kills and seven digs.
- Gabby Reeves and Arina Sosinovica dished out 21 and 24 assists, respectively.
- Svenja Rodenbüsch had seven kills, 11 digs and one ace.
- As a team, NU led Saint Peter's in kills (56), assists (51), total blocks (7.0) and hitting % (.308)
The Huskies will close out the Holly Young Invitational tomorrow with two games, starting against Holy Cross at 10 a.m. and finishing with New Hampshire at 7 p.m.
