BOSTON -- Camryn Collins scored a game-high 19 points as the Northeastern women's basketball team (5-9, 1-3 CAA) snapped Monmouth's (10-5, 3-1 CAA) eight-game winning streak with a 72-67 victory at the Cabot Center on Sunday afternoon, earning the Huskies their first CAA win of the season.
The Huskies had four players score in double figures, led by Collins, who went 6-for-11 from the field including 4-of-5 from three-point range.
Taylor Holohan added 14 points,
Justice Tramble chipped in 13 points and five rebounds, and
Alyssa Staten contributed 12 points off the bench. Collins, Tramble, and Holohan each posted back-to-back games of 10-plus points following their strong performances against North Carolina A&T on Friday.
Northeastern came out firing, opening the game with an 8-0 run in the first 1:51 of action. Collins got the Huskies on the board with a pull-up jumper, followed by a pair of fast break layups from Tramble and Holohan. The Huskies extended their advantage with an 11-0 run midway through the quarter, building a 17-point lead at 23-6.
Monmouth responded in the second quarter, outscoring Northeastern 24-13 to pull within four at halftime. The Hawks continued their push in the third quarter, eventually tying the game at 40-40. The contest remained tight throughout the fourth, with Monmouth tying it at 61-61 with just over two minutes remaining.
Collins answered with a clutch three-pointer with 1:25 to play, giving Northeastern a 64-61 lead it would not relinquish. The Huskies closed the game on an 8-6 run, sealing the victory from the free throw line.
Northeastern shot 50 percent from the field and converted 24-of-30 free throws (80 percent) to secure the win. The Huskies were clutch from the charity stripe down the stretch, led by Staten (6-7), Tramble (5-5), and Collins (3-4).
Kailee Beaudion-Foliaki and
Nariyah Simmons each went 2-for-2 in the final nine seconds to ice the victory.
The Huskies held Monmouth to just 18.2 percent shooting in the first quarter and 36.1 percent for the game. The victory snapped Monmouth's eight-game winning streak and dealt the Hawks their first CAA loss of the season. Northeastern held the lead for 33 minutes and 11 seconds of the contest.
