LOWELL, Mass. -- Sophomore Jack Henry scored his first collegiate goal to jump start the Northeastern men's hockey team to a 2-0 shutout over UMass Lowell on Friday night at Tsongas Arena.
After a scoreless opening frame, Northeastern and UMass Lowell headed to the first intermission knotted at 0-0. The River Hawks held a slim 21-20 edge in shots on goal.
Henry opened the scoring 13:11 into the second period, netting his first career goal to give Northeastern a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Griffin Erdman won a battle along the boards to free the puck before freshman Amine Hajibi sent a crisp pass from below the endline to Henry, who made a quick move to beat his defender and bury the eventual game winner.
With the River Hawks pulling their goaltender in the final minutes, Erdman came up big again -- showcasing some impressive hand-eye coordination to swat the puck down before sliding a backhand pass to junior Eli Sebastian for a breakaway empty-net goal and the 2-0 final.
Goaltender Lawton Zacher turned aside 32 shots to earn his 11th win of the season and nation-leading fifth shutout. Sebastian and senior Austen May anchored the Huskies, each finishing with a team-high three blocked shots.
Northeastern returns to Tsongas Arena tomorrow night to close out their weekend series with UMass Lowell at 6:05 p.m.
