FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Northeastern Huskies (0-5) were unable to complete the series split against Minnesota on Sunday afternoon at Hammond Stadium, falling 15-5 to close out the Fort Myers weekend. Despite a promising start that saw the Huskies jump out to a 2-1 lead after the first inning, five errors proved costly as the Golden Gophers (5-1) pulled away with five runs in the second and never looked back.
Northeastern scored in each of the first three innings but couldn't sustain the momentum, going scoreless over the final four frames as the Huskies drop to 0-5 on the young season.
- The Huskies got off to a strong start in the first, loading the bases on a Carmelo Musacchia walk, a hit-by-pitch to Ryan Gerety, and a Harrison Feinberg single to center. Anthony Ruggiero drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home the first run, and Carter Bentley followed with an RBI fielder's choice to make it 2-0 before Minnesota answered with an unearned run in the bottom half.
- The Huskies added two more in the second, with Henry DiGiorgio leading off with a walk and eventually advancing to third on a wild pitch and a Musacchia single to right center. Gerety followed with a two-run single to center, plating both DiGiorgio and Musacchia to push the lead to 4-1.
- Minnesota answered emphatically in the bottom of the second with five runs, to lead 6-4.
- Northeastern pushed across one more in the third on consecutive doubles from Bentley and Eric Cha. Bentley led off with a shot to right and advanced to third on a grounder, before Cha laced a double to center to bring him home. Cha then stole third before the inning ended, but the Huskies couldn't add on another before Minnesota tacked on three more in the bottom of the frame.
- Carson Walsh provided the lone scoreless outing out of the bullpen, working a clean sixth inning and striking out two batters.
- Gerety led Northeastern offensively, going 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Bentley went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Cha added a double and an RBI in two at-bats. Musacchia reached twice and scored twice.
Northeastern returns to action next weekend with a trip to Baton Rouge, La., where the Huskies will face Grambling State and LSU at Alex Box Stadium beginning Friday, February 27th.
