LOWELL, Mass. — The Northeastern men's hockey team rallied late but couldn't complete the comeback, falling 3-2 to No. 20/RV Maine on Saturday night.
Northeastern grabbed a 1-0 lead at 10:33 of the first as sophomore Joe Connor buried his 12th goal of the season. Junior Dylan Hryckowian sparked the play with a quick rush up the ice, dropping the puck back to junior Tyler Fukakusa, who found Connor waiting in the right dot for a perfect one-timer.
Maine responded with three unanswered goals in the second period to take a 3-1 lead, with Frank Djurasevic accounting for the first two and Sully Scholle adding the third.
With 12:42 remaining, freshman Giacomo Martino cut Maine's advantage to 3-2 with his 11th goal of the year. Off a stretch pass from sophomore Jack Henry, Connor and Martino connected on a give-and-go, with Martino burying it top shelf.
Despite late-period pressure, the Huskies could not close the gap. Hryckowian paced both teams with nine shots on goal, and seniors Vinny Borgesi and Austen May along with freshman Noah Jones each posted a team-high two blocked shots.
Goaltender Lawton Zacher made 23 saves in 59:54 minutes of action.
Northeastern closes out the Hockey East regular season next Saturday, March 7, against Boston College at Conte Forum (7 p.m.).
