CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Northeastern men's hockey team erased a two-goal hole to knock off No. 13 Boston College, 4-2, at Conte Forum on Saturday night, completing a three-game sweep of the Eagles this season.
Boston College struck early in each of the first two periods to build a 2-0 lead. Lukas Gustafsson opened the scoring on the power play in the first period, and Nolan Joyce added another three minutes into the second.
The Huskies rallied with two straight to tie it at 2-2 before the second period was out. Freshman
Jack Pechar started the comeback at 5:43, collecting the puck and finishing with a backhand in front of the net — his first of the night assisted by freshman
Matthew Maltais and junior
Matthew Perkins.
With two minutes remaining in the period, freshman
Giacomo Martino leveled the score at 2-2 with his seventh power-play goal of the season. Senior
Austen May and junior
Dylan Hryckowian worked the offensive zone to create the opportunity, finding Martino open in the slot for the finish.
The Huskies grabbed their first lead of the night at the 6:26 mark of the third. Freshman
Jacob Mathieu jumpstarted the sequence with a heads-up neutral-zone intercept, and when his shot rebounded to the left dot, Hajibi was there to bury the go-ahead goal and put Northeastern on top, 3-2.
Northeastern pushed the lead to 4-2 on Martino's second of the game. With senior
Vinny Borgesi attempting to ice the puck, Hryckowian outskated the Eagles defender to keep the play alive, circled behind the net and fed Martino for a five-hole finish.
Junior goaltender
Lawton Zacher was steady between the pipes, turning aside 25 shots to earn his 14th win of the season. Freshman
Noah Jones led the team with three blocked shots, while Connor and Martino each registered a team-high four shots on goal.
With the win, Northeastern clinches the No. 7 seed in the Hockey East Tournament and will host a first-round game this Wednesday. Opponent and game time are to be announced.
