BROOKLINE, Mass. -- The Northeastern Huskies (12-9, 7-2 CAA) took the rubber match from the Elon Phoenix (10-13, 3-6 CAA) in emphatic fashion on Sunday afternoon, winning 17-7 in eight innings via the run rule to clinch the weekend series at Friedman Diamond. Carmelo Musacchia paced the offense with a 3-for-5 day that included a home run, a double, and three RBIs, while seven different Huskies drove in runs as Northeastern pounded out 14 hits and drew 10 walks.
A seven-run fourth inning blew the game open after the teams traded early runs, and Andrew Rogovic earned the win with two strong innings of relief that bridged a rocky start into a comfortable lead.
- Elon grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly, but Northeastern answered immediately in the bottom of the frame when Ryan Gerety singled and Harrison Feinberg doubled to right field to drive him home and tie it at 1-1.
- The Huskies took the lead for good in the second. AJ Aschettino walked and advanced to second on a balk before Chris Walsh ripped an RBI double to left field. Gerety followed with an RBI single through the right side to make it 3-1.
- Northeastern erupted for seven runs in the fourth to blow the game open. Walsh was hit by a pitch and Gerety singled to put two on, and a double steal during a Feinberg strikeout moved both into scoring position. Matt Brinker laced a two-run double to left to plate them both, and Musacchia followed with a two-run homer to left center — his second of the season — to push the lead to 7-1. Cooper Tarantino doubled down the left field line and stole third, Anthony Ruggiero walked and stole second, and Carter Bentley cleared the bases with a triple to deep center field for a 10-1 advantage.
- Elon answered with three in the fifth on an RBI single and a two-run triple, but Northeastern matched it in the bottom of the frame. Feinberg doubled to center to score Gerety, and after Brinker walked and Musacchia singled, Tarantino ripped a two-run triple down the right field line to push the lead to 13-4.
- The Huskies tacked on three more in the sixth without recording a hit. Feinberg, Brinker, and Musacchia loaded the bases on a walk, a hit-by-pitch, and a walk before all three scored on an Elon dropped fly ball to make it 16-4.
- Elon cut into the deficit with three runs in the seventh on three walks without recording an out before Joseph Hauser came on and limited the damage. Hauser worked the final two innings, allowing no runs on three hits with two strikeouts to close it out.
- Musacchia capped the scoring in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI double to center, plating Feinberg and triggering the run rule at 17-7.
- Rogovic (1-1) earned the win with two innings of work, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out five. Ryan Griffin worked the first four innings, allowing three runs on four hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
- Feinberg reached base four times, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs, two walks, and two runs scored. Brinker went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, and three runs scored. Tarantino added a double, a triple, and two RBIs.
- The Huskies swiped five more bases, led by steals from Walsh, Tarantino, Aschettino, Ruggiero, and Gerety. Northeastern played error-free baseball in the field after committing three errors in Saturday's loss.
- Northeastern takes the series two games to one over Elon, improving to 7-2 in CAA play. It's the 13th straight CAA series win for Northeastern, and 10th straight weekend series win at home.
Northeastern returns to action on Tuesday, March 24th, hosting Boston College at 2:30 p.m. at Friedman Diamond before a Wednesday trip to UMass Lowell.
