BROOKLINE, Mass. -- Trailing 8-1 after four innings, Northeastern (18-14) rallied for one of the most remarkable comeback wins in recent program history, scoring ten unanswered runs across eight innings to defeat Merrimack (13-17) 11-10 in 12 innings on Friday afternoon at Friedman Diamond. AJ Aschettino delivered the walk-off sacrifice fly to left field in the bottom of the twelfth, plating Ryan Gerety to end a 4-hour, 22-minute battle.
Andrew Rogovic (2-1) earned the win with four dominant innings of relief, highlighted by a stretch of six consecutive strikeouts — the first time a Northeastern pitcher had accomplished the feat since Kyle Murphy did it in back-to-back innings at Hofstra in April 2021. Rogovic struck out a career-high eight of the fifteen batters he faced in all. David McSweeney provided a heroic 3.2 innings of relief, allowing just one run on three hits, striking out four, to keep Merrimack in check, giving the Husky offense the time it needed to complete the rally when Harrison Feinberg tied the game with a three-run home run in the eighth.
- Northeastern struck first when back to back doubles by Gerety and Feinberg put Northeastern up 1-0.
- The Warriors answered back with a pair of unearned runs in the second inning to lead 2-1, and then plated six in the fourth as the game seemed to unravel for the Huskies.
- The Huskies began their comeback in the fourth inning, as Cooper Tarantino walked, Charlie Criscola was hit by a pitch, and Carter Bentley singled to load the bases. Tyler Harmony drew a bases-loaded walk to score Tarantino, and Gerety's two-run single to right brought home two more to make it 8-4.
- Northeastern added two more in the seventh when Feinberg was hit by a pitch, stole second, then stole third, before Aschettino tripled to right center to plate him. Tarantino's groundout scored Aschettino to cut the deficit to 8-6.
- Feinberg's three-run home run to deep center in the eighth — with Harmony on second and Gerety on first — tied the game at 9-9. It was his seventh long ball of the season, and his first with a runner in scoring position.
- After the game went to extras, Merrimack tallied a sac fly in the 11th to seemingly take the lead for good.
- The Huskies tied the game in the eleventh on a sacrifice bunt by Carter Bentley, scoring Aschettino from third on the play.
- In the bottom of the twelfth, Gerety led off with a double, Feinberg was intentionally walked, and Brinker was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Aschettino lifted the walk-off sacrifice fly to left to score Gerety and cap the comeback.
- Feinberg finished 2-for-4 with four RBI, a stolen base, two hit-by-pitches, and four stolen bases. Gerety went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Aschettino was 2-for-6 with three RBI including the walk-off, and finished a home run shy of the cycle. Criscola went 3-for-4 on the afternoon, and Tyler Harmony notched his first two career hits in the contest.
- Northeastern stole eight bases in the game to extend its season total to 126.
The Huskies continue their home series against Merrimack on Saturday, April 11th, in game one of a two-team double header, with games scheduled for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Friedman Diamond. Game two will be against the Maine Black Bears. Both games will stream on FloCollege.
