PORTLAND, Maine -- Six Northeastern pitchers combined to hold Maine hitless into the seventh inning as the Huskies defeated the Black Bears 5-1 on Wednesday evening at Delta Dental Park, clinching the season series two games to one and taking the national lead in stolen bases in the process.
Northeastern (26-17) got an efficient one-inning start from Ryan McCarroll before Scott Longo (1-0) took over and fired a hitless second inning to earn his first career collegiate win. Five more relievers kept Maine (15-26) without a hit through 6.1 innings before and preserved a shutout until the ninth. Andrew Rogovic (S, 3) entered with runners on second and third and one out and retired the final two batters to close it out, stranding both runners and preserving the four-run victory.Â
- Northeastern broke through with a three-run third inning built on three hits and a stolen base by Henry DiGiorgio. Will Fosberg drew a lead-off walk, DiGiorgio singled to left to put runners on first and second, and Tyler Harmony followed with an RBI single to left to score Fosberg. Harrison Feinberg reached on a fielder's choice that pushed DiGiorgio to third, and with Feinberg on first and DiGiorgio on third, both took off simultaneously — Feinberg stealing second and DiGiorgio stealing home — to extend the lead to 3-0. Ryan Gerety added an RBI single to right to score Feinberg and cap the inning.
- Northeastern added two more in the top of the fifth on Matt Brinker's two-run double down the left field line, the only extra-base hit of the game for either team through eight innings. Harmony and Feinberg had walked ahead of Brinker, who sent both home after Gerety struck out on a full-count pitch with the two runners in motion. Brinker advanced to third on a wild pitch before the inning ended, but the damage was done at 5-0.
- Northeastern's pitching staff was dominant through the first eight innings. McCarroll worked a hitless first, and Longo was equally sharp in the second before giving way to Tom Mahoney, Cam Keaveney, James Morice, David McSweeney, and Jack Cropper in succession. The no-hit bid ended with a bloop sinlge in the bottom of the seventh..In all, nine pitchers combined to allow just six hits and one run, with McSweeney's two-inning outing — two hits, one walk, three strikeouts — the longest of the night.
- The Huskies swiped nine bases on the evening to move to 167 on the season, taking sole possession of the national lead in stolen bases. Harrison Feinberg led the way with three, AJ Aschettino had two, while Harmony, Gerety, Carmelo Musacchia, and DiGiorgio each swiped one. Feinberg now has 35 stolen bases on the season, which remains first in the CAA and top-five nationally.
- Brinker finished 1-for-5 with two RBIs, while Gerety went 1-for-5 with an RBI. Harmony was 1-for-4 with a walk, an RBI, two runs scored, and two stolen bases. DiGiorgio finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.
The Huskies open a three-game CAA road series at Monmouth on Friday, May 1st at 3 p.m., streaming on FloCollege.
