STORRS, Conn. -- The Northeastern Huskies (32-18) used a four-run sixth inning and a pair of late two-run innings to pull away from the UConn Huskies (30-23) for a 10-6 victory on Tuesday evening at Elliot Ballpark, avenging an early-season loss to UConn and improving to 5-0 all-time at the venue since its opening.
Trailing 6-2 after five innings, Northeastern's offense broke through with four runs in the sixth to tie the game, two in the seventh to take the lead, and two more in the ninth to put it away, outscoring UConn 8-0 over the final four frames. Will Fosberg was the offensive star, collecting three hits — including two doubles — and driving in three runs, while David McSweeney earned the win with three scoreless innings of relief after entering a bases-loaded jam in the fifth. Eight Northeastern pitchers combined to limit UConn to just six runs on seven hits in the contest.
- Northeastern grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Harrison Feinberg singled, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error, and scored on a Ryan Gerety sacrifice fly to center.
- UConn answered with two in the bottom of the first on an RBI single and an RBI groundout to take a 2-1 lead.
- The NU Huskies tied it in the second when Charlie Criscola walked, advanced to third on a Fosberg single to right, and scored on a Henry DiGiorgio sacrifice fly.
- UConn retook the lead in the bottom of the second on a two-run home run to right field, making it 4-2.
- UConn loaded the bases with three walks in the fifth, but McSweeney entered in relief and escaped the jam, allowing just a sacrifice fly and an RBI single before inducing a groundout to limit the damage to two runs and a 6-2 deficit.
- Northeastern stormed back with four runs in the sixth to tie the game at 6-6. Matt Brinker singled and AJ Aschettino reached on an outfield error. Criscola delivered a two-run single to right to score both runners. After a groundout moved Criscola to second, Fosberg doubled to right center to drive in Criscola for the third run of the inning. DiGiorgio then reached on an infield error and Fosberg scored on a Tyler Harmony RBI groundout to knot the score.
- The Huskies took the lead for good in the seventh. Gerety doubled down the right field line, and Brinker singled to center to advance Gerety to third, where he scored when the catcher dropped the tag. Aschettino singled to center to move Brinker to third, and he too scored on a UConn error, giving Northeastern an 8-6 advantage.
- Northeastern added two insurance runs in the ninth when Brinker was hit by a pitch and Musacchia singled to put runners on first and second. Fosberg then ripped a two-run double to right center to bring home both and push the lead to 10-6.
- McSweeney earned the win with three scoreless innings of one-hit relief, striking out two and inducing four ground-ball outs. Matthew Sapienza and Andrew Rogovic each worked a scoreless inning to close out the game, with Rogovic stranding the bases loaded in the ninth on back-to-back strikeouts.
- Fosberg finished 3-for-5 with two doubles and five RBIs, setting a new career high in RBIs. His clutch two-run doubles in the sixth and ninth innings were the biggest swings of the night.
- Northeastern pounded out 13 hits in the contest, with Brinker (3-for-4), Aschettino (3-for-5), and Feinberg (2-for-4) also contributing multi-hit games. Feinberg's two hits were the 199th and 200th of his career, just the ninth Husky in program history to reach 200 hits.
Northeastern closes out the CAA regular season this weekend with a three-game series at Towson beginning Thursday, May 14th at 3 p.m. All three games will stream on FloCollege.
