BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Northeastern women's soccer team (2-4-2) hung tough for most of the match against Massachusetts (6-1-0), trailing by a goal at halftime before the Minutewomen tacked on a pair of second half tallies to run past the Huskies on Sunday at Parsons Field, 3-0.
Prior to the match, the Huskies honored the five members of their senior class for their dedication to the women's soccer program and the Northeastern community:
Eliza Teplow,
Maddie Aughe,
Juliana Garcia,
Catrina Herman and
Ava Nace.
UMass struck first in the 23rd minute when Caroline Dickson took a feed from Nia Hislop before her shot ricocheted off a body and past NU goalkeeper
Eliza Teplow to make it 1-0, capping a stretch in which the Minutewomen controlled possession and generated the game's best early chances. Teplow kept the deficit manageable in the first half, turning away shots from Monica Curry and Kayla Nohasiarisoa to help the Huskies reach the break down just one goal.
The Huskies pushed for an equalizer to open the second half, testing Massachusetts keeper Leah Nisenfeld early, but couldn't find the breakthrough. Dickson delivered the decisive blow in the 72nd minute, converting a Libby Fisher long pass to double the UMass lead to 2-0. Monica Curry added an unassisted insurance goal in the 78th minute, capping the scoring at 3-0.
Nisenfeld made seven saves to earn the win and preserve the shutout, improving to 6-1-0 on the year. Teplow also finished with seven saves.
Northeastern will open conference play next weekend when the Huskies travel to Philadelphia for a 1 p.m. match at Drexel.
