James Howard starts his first season as the Northeastern baseball team's volunteer assistant coach in 2017 after joining the staff in August 2016. His coaching duties primarily include working with the Huskies’ hitters and outfielders, serving as first base coach, and aiding in the team's recruiting efforts.
Â
Prior to coaching at the collegiate level, Howard spent time working for both the New York Mets and MLB.
Â
Howard played four seasons as an outfielder and first baseman at Tufts, where he graduated in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in history. During his junior and senior seasons, he worked closely with the Jumbos’ former hitting coach and now current NU assistant coach, Kevin Casey.
Â
A junior during Tufts’ 34-win campaign in 2014, Howard played a key role in the team’s success that year, helping the Jumbos reach the NESCAC finals as well as earn the program’s first at-large bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. The following year, he capped off his career by winning the All-New England Gold Glove award at first base, helping guide Tufts back to the postseason.
