Northeastern University men's basketball head coach Bill Coen announced June 24 the promotion of Steve Scalzi to assistant coach. Scalzi, who previously served as the director of basketball operations, enters his eighth season with the Northeastern program.
"Steve has been a loyal member of our basketball family and I'm excited to elevate him to the role of assistant coach," Coen said. "He is a lifelong student of the game who has a bright coaching future. He is intelligent, energetic, and possesses a great work ethic and devotion to basketball. He is passionate about Northeastern and is committed to the success of our program and our student-athletes."
Few people know the Northeastern athletics landscape better than Scalzi. As director of operations, he has been instrumental in the daily activities of the men's basketball program for seven seasons. In that role, Scalzi coordinated team travel arrangements and was responsible for managing film exchange for scouting purposes. He also assisted with NCAA compliance, on-campus recruiting, team academics, and served as the direct liaison with numerous departments on campus, including alumni relations and community relations.
"I have always been honored to call Northeastern University my home and be a part of the Northeastern basketball family," Scalzi said. "I am humbled to now have the opportunity to represent such an elite institution in an elevated role. I look forward to getting on the court, hitting the recruiting trail, and making an impact in both the CAA and on a national scale."
A 2006 graduate of Boston College, Scalzi spent four seasons as a student assistant on the Eagles staff, working closely with Coen. Scalzi played a key role in converting the Eagles' video operations into a digital format and aided the coaching staff in running individual player workout sessions. He was awarded the Mary Kaye Waldron Award for outstanding dedication to Boston College basketball.
During Scalzi's four years at BC, the Eagles earned three NCAA tournament berths and made one trip to the NIT. In 2005, BC won the Big East regular season title and in 2006 advanced to the ACC Tournament championship game.
All told, Scalzi has been part of seven postseason appearances in his 11 seasons working in college basketball.
Scalzi holds a dual bachelor's degree from Boston College in history and human development and earned his master's degree in corporate leadership and organizational communications from Northeastern in December 2009.
Scalzi and his wife, Krystal, currently reside in Boston's South End.
