Sophomore hurdler Saleena Abdur-Rashed (Bronx, N.Y.) of the Northeastern University women’s track & field team has been named Student-Athlete of the Week after overcoming 75 other competitors in the 100-meter hurdles at last week’s Raleigh Relays.
Abdur-Rashed motored for an ECAC-qualifying mark of 14.15 in the preliminary round of the 100-meter hurdles. The second-year speedster finished 12th after clocking in 14.32, but still outperformed 75 other student-athletes in Raleigh, N.C.
The Huskies’ hurdling specialist has been on a tear in the early goings of the outdoor season. In the season opener at the Seahawk Invitational in Wilmington, N.C., Abdur-Rashed claimed both the 100- and 400-meter titles with respective times of 14.67 and 1:05.65. The following race, Abdur-Rashed flashed her speed in front of the Northeastern faithful with a winning, ECAC-qualifying clip of 14.17 at Solomon Track in Dedham, Mass.
During the indoor season, Abdur-Rashed enjoyed similar success with five top-three showings at the Jay Carisella Track & Field Invitational, Dartmouth Relays, Boston Indoor Games, Battle of Beantown and at the New England Championship.
Abdur-Rashed and the rest of the Northeastern track & field team have four meets before vying for its second CAA track & field championship. The Huskies claimed Northeastern’s first-ever CAA title by capturing the CAA Championship in 2007.
Northeastern will next compete at the Wildcat Invitational on Saturday, Apr. 3 in Durham, N.H. The University of New Hampshire will host the five-way meet between UNH, Northeastern, Maine, Holy Cross and Dartmouth. Events get underway at 11:00 a.m.
