The Huskies hung tough with the Big East's Miami, but lost a tight 92-86 decision at Miami Arena. Charles Cranford led the way with 20 points and 10 rebounds. NU shot a blistering 67.9 percent (19-28) in the first half and trailed just 48-43 at the half. NU had a 21-16 lead, before the Hurricanes charged back to take the lead for good.
Miami started the second half with a 9-0 run to open up a 14-point bulge. The 'Canes led by 12 with three minutes to go before a final spurt by the Huskies created the game's final margin. Jean Bain had a strong afternoon with 17 points and 11 assists. He is the first player since Halim Abdullah to record a double-figure assist total in a game for the Huskies. Abdullah had 10 against Drexel on March 5, 1994.
Marcus Blossom also had a great day, hitting 7-10 field goal tries and finishing with 19 points and five assists. Tyrone Hammick, who had a team-high 15 points in NU's loss at Navy to open the season Nov. 20, had 15 more against the Hurricanes to go with seven rebounds.
Coach Rudy Keeling played just seven guys against Miami as his team is already banged up. Freshman Jean Francois, a West Palm Beach native, returned to his home state and had eight points in 19 minutes of action.
Next up for the Huskies will be their home opener on Tuesday against Harvard. Before the game, NU will dedicate its basketball facility in honor of Bernard Solomon and his wife Jolane. Tipoff will be at 7 p.m.
