Harvard dominated in the second half and rolled to an 88-65 win over Northeastern at Solomon Court.
The Crimson (2-1) outscored the Huskies (0-3) 51-29 in the second half. Harvard made 16-22 field goal tries (72.7 percent) after intermission, and finished at 58.5 percent for the game. Senior Dan Clemente led the way with 24 points, while sophomore Patrick Harvey added 23. Sophomore Elliott Prasse-Freeman also had a great night, handing out 15 assists. The total matched Prasse-Freeman's career high and tied the Harvard game record.
Charles Cranford led the Huskies with 14 points. Jean Bain and Dwayne Barnes netted 11 apiece.
Harvard led just 37-36 at the half, but came out hot after the break and used a 17-4 run to open a commanding 54-40 edge with 13:16 left. Clemente and Harvey each had six points in the surge. NU made just one of its first nine shots of the second half and committed three of its 20 turnovers during the Crimson's decisive run. On Saturday, Harvard held Lehigh to just 1-17 shooting to start the second half and came from behind to win.
The Crimson routinely got easy buckets against the Huskies, finishing the game with 44 of their 88 points in the paint. NU got within 10 as Jean Francois made a layup to cut the Harvard edge to 60-50 with 9:04 left. But, Harvard came right back with five straight points and reclaimed a comfortable advantage when Clemente drained a three-pointer to make it 65-50 with 7:05 showing. The lead would grow as large as 25 on a pair of Clemente free throws that made it 88-63 with 49 seconds to go.
The first half was back and forth with nine lead changes and five ties. The Huskies had an early five-point lead, 10-5, with 16:35 to go. The Crimson fired back with a 10-0 run to take a 15-10 lead with 12:49 to go in the first half. The teams traded baskets the rest of the half. Barnes hit a three-pointer with 1:52 left to give NU its last lead of the game, 36-35. Onnie Mayshak made a pair of free throws to put Harvard ahead for good with eight seconds left and the Crimson led 37-36 at the break.
The loss put a damper on pre-game NU festivities that honored Bernard Solomon and his wife Jolane. The Huskies' basketball facility, formerly known as Cabot Gym, will now be known as Solomon Court.
