Northeastern came out hot at the toughest place to play in America East, but ran out of steam in the second half and lost to Delaware, 71-54, at the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark, Del. on Thursday.
Delaware made its decisive run with the score tied at 39 and 18:34 left. The Blue Hens outscored NU 16-2 over the next 6:23 for a commanding 55-41 edge. The Huskies got no closer than 11 the rest of the way. In all, the Hens outscored NU 34-20 in the second half while holding the Huskies to 29.0 percent (9-31) shooting. Delaware hit a blistering 57.1 percent (12-21) in the second half.
It was a double loss for NU on Thursday as Marcus Blossom left the game with 16:29 left in the second half after suffering a concussion. He collided with teammate Jean Francois going after a loose ball. Blossom is questionable for NU's game at Towson on Saturday.
The Huskies and Blue Hens both hit 14-31 field goal attempts in a first half that couldn't have been much more even. The lead changed sides 17 times and there were four ties. Delaware took a 37-34 edge into intermission. NU's Tyrone Hammick had 11 of his team-high 21 points in the first half and Blossom 10 of his 13 points for the Huskies. NU's largest lead of the night was three, up 23-20 with 8:08 to go in the first half after a Blossom jumper.
NU led 34-33 with 1:31 to go before halftime, but the Blue Hens netted the last four points for a 37-34 edge at the break.
Ajmal Basit led Delaware with a career-high 25 points. The Huskies have now lost eight straight games to the Hens at the Bob Carpenter Center. Delaware has won 41 of its last 44 home games.
