Charles Cranford scored a career-high 29 points on 13-18 field goal shooting to lead Northeastern to a 79-68 win over Vermont at Solomon Court on Monday.
Cranford had 17 points on 8-10 accuracy in the second half as the Huskies extended the lead to as much as 20 before a late Catamount rally made it a nine-point game. UVM got no closer, however, as NU won its second straight game to improve to 4-13, 3-6 in America East play. Vermont dropped its 11th in a row and fell to 4-13, 1-8.
Three other Huskies scored in double figures as Marcus Blossom, Tyrone Hammick and Dwayne Barnes added 10 points apiece. Freshman T.J. Sorrentine paced Vermont with 20 points, while teammate Andre Anderson had 11 and Grant Anderson 10. The Catamounts were without their flu-ridden top scorer, Tony Orciari (17 points per game), for the second straight game.
The game was tied at 25 with 3:33 left in the first half, but the Huskies went on a 10-0 run to take the lead for good and go into the break with a 35-25 edge. Cranford had six points in the surge. NU added to the cushion by starting the second half with a 7-1 spurt to make it 42-26 with 18:14 left. Again, Cranford was the spark, netting the first four points of the run. Overall, the Huskies outscored the Catamounts 17-1 over a span of 5:19.
The lead grew as wide as 63-43 with 8:01 to go before UVM went on a 19-8 run to make it a 71-62 game with 1:30 left. The Huskies made 8-9 free throws in the final 1:23, including four straight from Jean Bain, to preserve the advantage.
The Huskies made five of their first six field goal tries and jumped out to a 12-2 lead with 16:32 to go in the first half. But NU then went cold, hitting just five of its next 17 shots as UVM came back with a 21-11 run over the next 11:28 to tie the game at 23 with 5:04 remaining. After the teams traded baskets, Hammick hit a pair of free throws with 3:13 left to give NU a 27-25 lead and the Huskies never trailed again.
