Norman Richardson scored 18 points and Jason Hernandez added 16 to lead Hofstra to a 72-65 win over Northeastern at Solomon Court on Sunday.
NU trailed just 60-59 after a Marcus Blossom three-pointer with 4:56 left, but then had a 4:39 scoreless drought as the Flying Dutchmen went on an 8-0 run to put the game away. Rick Apodaca (9 points) hit a pair of free throws to give the Dutchmen a 68-59 edge with only 26 seconds left.
Hofstra improved to 9-4 overall and 3-2 in America East, while the Huskies fell to 2-10, 1-3. The Huskies were 0-4 from the field with three turnovers during Hofstra's decisive surge. Charles Cranford led NU with a game-high 20 points, while Marcus Blossom added 18, 11 coming in the second half.
Hofstra led 35-31 at halftime, and extended the lead to nine, 52-43, after a dunk by Roberto Gittens with 13:03 left to play. The Dutchmen eventually built an 11-point edge, their largest of the afternoon, up 60-49 with 8:43 remaining. NU came back with a 10-0 surge capped by three-pointers from Cleophus Morris and Blossom that cut Hofstra's edge to one, 60-59, with 4:56 left. That's when NU fell apart, failing to score on its next seven possessions.
The Huskies jumped out to an early 13-5 lead at the 15:39 mark, with Cranford scoring eight of NU's 13. The Dutchmen responded with a 10-2 run of their own to make the scored tied at 15 with 11:17 to play. The teams battled back and forth and Hofstra went into intermission up four, 35-31.
It was Hofstra's sixth straight win over the Huskies.
