BROOKLINE, MA - Northeastern lost for the first time at home this season, falling 2-0 to first place Towson on Friday night at Parsons Field. The Huskies have now lost three straight conference matches and have been held scoreless in two straight games.
Towson got on the board first in the 22nd minute when Todd Lauber converted what would prove to be the game-winner on a penalty kick, to give the Tigers a 1-0 margin. NU defender Oumar Thiam was whistled for a hard foul in the box which resulted in the penalty. The rest of the first half was a physical, defensive battle. The best chance for NU to add an equalizer came with just one second left in the first half when Ruben Claudio fed Petter Starnas in the box. Starnas blasted a shot that went past the Towson keeper toward the goal, but Tiger defender Tim Gober came across the goal mouth and headed the ball away to earn a key defender save and give Towson a 1-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Tigers struck again early as Machel Millard found Alfonso DeMares in the middle of the box and DeMares blasted a shot past NU keeper Allan Lewis for a 2-0 advantage. The goal came on just the second Towson shot of the match. NU came back hard after the goal and dominated the game the rest of the way, but were unable to find the net. The Huskies outshot the Tigers 9-6 in the second half and 14-7 overall. Allan Lewis recorded two saves in net for NU, while Towson reserve keeper Andy Hicks, who replaced the injured Chris Hurley in the first half, recorded four saves.
