ALLSTON, MA - The Northeastern men's basketball team was defeated 68-61 by Harvard in non-conference action on Tuesday night at Lavietes Pavillion.
Patrick Harvey scored a game-high 24 points to lead the way for the Crimson, while Tim Coleman added the game's only double-double with 12 points and 10 points.
The Huskies were led by freshman Aaron Davis who tallied 18 points, while Toby Brittian added 11 points and Cornellius Wright 10.
NU trailed 63-61 after a pair of free throws by Davis with 1:22 left. Harvard's Andrew Gellert was fouled with 1:16 left in the game and missed a pair of free throws. Northeastern failed to box out the shooter as Gellert scrambled to get his own rebound on the baseline. Gellert kicked out to Harvey who knocked down the open three to stretch the Crimson's lead to 66-61. Harvey would later add two free throws to give the game its final 68-61 margin.
The Huskies opened the second half on a 7-0 run to cut Harvard's lead to one, 34-33. NU would later take the lead for the first time (37-36) since 2-0 on a Davis layup at 16:33. Northeastern last led 40-39 with 15:34 to go.
Northeastern got on the board first on a jumper by Wright at 18:03 in the first half, but Harvard ran off 14 straight points over the next 5:12 for a 14-2 Crimson advantage with 12:51 left before the break. Harvard extended its bulge to as much as 19 (28-9) after a three-pointer by Harvey with 7:22 left in the first frame. NU roared back with a 15-2 surge to cut the deficit to six (30-24) after a layup by Tim West with 1:39 to go in the first half. The Crimson scored the last four points of the half for a 34-24 lead at intermission.
NU falls to 0-5 on the season, its worst start since 1996-97 (0-5), while Harvard improves to 3-1 on the year. Next up for Northeastern is the Big East's Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. on Nov. 29 at 7 p.m.
