BROOKLINE, MA - Behind two first half goals from senior Nicole Soules, the Boston University Terriers defeated Northeastern's women's soccer team 3-1 in America East action at Parsons Field on Saturday night. With the victory, BU clinches the regular season conference title, the top spot and homefield for the 2001 America East women's soccer championship.
Both of Soules goals, which were scored at 30:32 and 39:40, were unassisted. Her second goal, the game-winner, came off a rebound of her own miss that was deflected by NU keeper Shellie Parkinson.
NU's best opportunity in the first half came when senior Caitlin Springer broke free past the BU defense. She fired one shot that was saved by Jessica Clinton and then collected the rebound and put it on net as well. Springer's second shot off the rebound trickled by Clinton and hit the left post.
BU made it 3-0 in the second half when a sliding Melissa Shulman saved the ball from going out of bounds on the end line and kept the ball in play. Teresa Petrucelli flipped the ball behind her to Rebecca Beyer who blasted in the five-yard chip shot for BU's third goal of the evening.
Northeastern had more opportunities in the second half, but couldn't convert on any of them until with just 36 seconds remaining. With the time winding down on her NU career, Springer broke free, settled, pivoted and then fired a shot past Clinton for her final goal of her career.
Springer ends her NU career with 14 goals and 34 points. She ranks second in career goals and is tied for second in career points.
In the victory BU improves to 12-5-1 on the season and 10-0-1 in America East action, while NU drops to 7-6-4 overall and 3-5-3 in conference play. Northeastern was eliminated from postseason play earlier in the day when Towson defeated Delaware for the final spot in the America East Championship. BU will face the winner of Tuesday's match up between #4 Delaware and #5 New Hampshire.
