Eric Schmieder led five Drexel players in double figures with a career-high 23 points and Robert Battle tied a school record with nine blocked shots as the Dragons defeated Northeastern, 83-72 on Tuesday night in Philadelphia. The win improved the Dragons' record to 3-6 on the season, while the Huskies fell to 1-8.
Freshman Antonio Johnson led NU with 13 points, while Jamaar Walker added 11 and Toby Brittian 10.
The Dragons opened the game with a 12-3 run and never trailed in the contest. Drexel was 8-9 from three-point territory in the early going as the hosts opened up a commanding 33-19 lead. The Huskies cut the lead to six, but were held without a field goal for the final 4:52 of the first half. Battle had seven blocks in the first half as the Dragons took a 43-33 lead to intermission. Drexel shot 54 percent from the floor in the first half and forced 11 Husky turnovers. Danny Hinds scored all 11 of his points in the first half.
Drexel started the second half like it did the first. The Dragons scored the first 12 points of the half to open up the lead to 22 points. Schmieder had 16 of his points in the final 20 minutes. The junior also had seven rebounds and six assists in the game.
Battle just missed a triple-double with 13 points and eight rebounds to go along with his nine blocks.
Drexel's starters outscored NU's starters 69-22. Ricky Cranford, who entered the game averaging a team-high 10.0 points per game, played just eight minutes and was held scoreless for the first time in his NU career.
"The three-point shot really killed us tonight," said first-year NU head coach Ron Everhart. "I'm certainly not discouraged with our effort. We never let up, but it's very tough to come back on the road. We're preparing for our league schedule and I think we're making progress."
The Huskies have a quick turnaround with just one day to prepare for visitin Rider on Thursday at Solomon Court (7 p.m.).
