KINGSTON, RI - The Northeastern men's basketball team lost a heartbreaker, 67-66, to Rhode Island on Saturday afternoon at Keaney Gym in Kingston.
A put-back by URI's Troy Wiley with 6.4 seconds gave the Rams the final margin of victory. Northeastern had one last possession, but a driving Jamaar Walker lost the ball and there was a scrum for the ball as time expired.
Senior Jean Bain and freshman Aaron Davis each led NU with 14 points, while Antonio Johnson added 12 for the Huskies. Leading the way for the Rams was Brian Woodward with 15.
Rhody used a 10-1 run to start the second half to take a 47-40 lead with 14:24 remaining. Northeastern responded with a 14-5 run to retake the lead with 8:47 to go. The teams would battle back-and-forth for the next eight and half minutes to set up Rhody's final score.
Northeastern outshot the Rams 40.4 percent (23-57) to 37.3 percent (22-59). The Huskies shot an impressive 40.0 percent (12-30) from beyond the three-point line as a team.
The Huskies took a 39-35 edge to the lockerroom at the half courtesy of nine first half three-pointers. NU came out of the blocks ready to fire as seven of the Huskies' first nine field goals were from beyond the arc.
Freshman Antonio Johnson scored the Huskies' first nine points, all three pointers, to give NU an early 9-3 lead. Northeastern stretched its first half lead to a 12, its largest of the half at 25-13, on a three-pointer from Davis at 8:35.
The Rams would battle back, however, as they closed the gap to one, 34-33, following a 20-9 URI run. NU responded with a small six to one spurt to close out the half with a four-point lead. Senior Jean Bain led all NU scorers with 11 at intermission.
With the loss, Northeastern drops to 2-9 on the season, while Rhody improves to 4-6. Next up for the Huskies is their first America East conference game of the season at New Hampshire on Saturday, Dec. 29 at 1 p.m.
